Los Angeles, CA - - Following Richard III, The Odyssey Theatre and Circus Theatricals’ summer 2002 collaboration is Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. The Cherry Orchard, which focuses on the comic absurdities of Russian gentry and their servants, is directed by Circus Theatricals Artistic Director Jack Stehlin, and features theatre veterans Alfred Molina, Jill Gascoine, Stephanie Zimbalist and Greg Mullavey. The Cherry Orchard will open June 8 and will run through July 28.
First produced in early 1904, The Cherry Orchard was Anton Chekhov’s final play. The play centers around the lives and loves of a land-owning family and their servants, on the eve of the Russian revolution. In The Cherry Orchard, Madame Lyubov Ranevskaya (Jill Gascoine) returns to her Russian estate after a long stay in Paris, to find her finances in ruins. The sale of her beloved estate and cherry orchard are immanent, unless Ranevskaya and her family follows the advice of the wealthy merchant Lophakhin (Alfred Molina) and chop down the orchard to make way for summer cottages.
Cast are Circus Theatricals members Alfred Molina (Lopakhin), Jill Gascoine (Madame Lyubov Ranevskaya), Nickella Dee (Anya), Dean Nichols (Yasha), Paul Taylor Robertson (Pischik) and Joel Polis (Yepikhodov), as well as Stephanie Zimbalist (Varya), Greg Mullavey (Gayev), Julie Dretzin (Dunyasha), Jack Kissell (Firs) and Andy Comeau (Trofimov). The Cherry Orchard is produced by Ron Sossi (Artistic Director of the Odyssey Theatre)and Jeannine Welles (Producing Director of Circus Theatricals).
The Cherry Orchard will run Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8PM, Sundays at 7PM. Matinees: Sundays June 23 and July 21 at 2PM (no 7PM perfs. on matinee dates).
