CIRCUS THEATRICALS ANNOUNCES SPRING 2006 SEASON
in NEW THEATRE HOME at THE HAYWORTH
‘MAIN STAGE PRODUCTION’ IS WORLD PREMIERE OF JOHN BUNZEL’S “COMPLEXITY” DIRECTED BY ELINA DE SANTOS
‘SECOND STAGE’ PRODUCTION IS COLETTE FREEDMAN’S NEW ADAPTATION OF EURIPEDES’ “IPHEGENIA IN AULIS” DIRECTED BY JACK STEHLIN
March 9, 2006 – Award-winning and critically-acclaimed theatre company, Circus Theatricals, launches its first Spring season at its new home in the newly renovated Circus Theatricals Studio Theatre at the Hayworth. The first ‘main stage’ production is the world premiere of John Bunzel’s COMPLEXITY (April 7 – May 27) directed by Elina de Santos. The first ‘second stage’ production is Colette Freedman’ new adaptation of Euripedes’ IPHIGENIA AT AULIS, (April 26 – May 31) directed by Jack Stehlin.
COMPLEXITY, by award-winning playwright John Bunzel, takes us inside the marriage of Tom and Jill, who are determined to stay together despite the interference of a secretary, house painter, fashion designer…and a single butterfly. Writer John Bunzel is the recipient of over ten playwriting awards including two L.A. Weekly Awards for Playwriting, which he received in 1996 for his dark comedy Gravity Shoes (co-produced by Circus Theatricals and The Hudson Theatre) and in 1985 for his ground-breaking play Delirious, (produced by Circus Theatricals) which was also nominated for Outstanding Production of the Year by the L.A. Drama Critics Circle. Award-winning director Elina de Santos directs. Elina de Santos has won multiple LADCC Awards, Orange County Weekly Awards, and Ovation Nominations. She most recently directed Modigliani for Circus Theatricals.
The cast includes Jack Stehlin (Circus Theatricals Artistic Director), Neil Vipond, Shannon Holt, Susan Duerden, Jennifer de Castroverde, and Nicholas Read. COMPLEXITY Previews April 7th, 8th and 14.th It opens April 15th, and will play Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm through May 27th.
IPHIGENIA AT AULIS is Euripedes’ classic tale of love, honor, and sacrifice. In Iphigenia, the Greek king prepares his soldiers for an attack on Troy. To assure a victory, he must sacrifice his beloved daughter to the gods. Colette Freedman wrote the new adaptation. Jack Stehlin directs. The cast includes Circus Theatricals members Thomas Kopache, Jade Sealey, John Ross Clark, James Karr, Donna Luisa Guinan, Robert Lesko, Jerry Goble, Lindsay Bellock, Rocky Bonifield and Strawn Bovee. IPHIGENIA IN AULIS will play Wednesdays at 8pm, April 26th – May 21st.
The Spring 2006 season will also include a “Lab production,” which are productions produced, written or directed and performed entirely by Circus Theatricals members. The first lab production is “Sister Cities,” by Colette Freedman. Sister Cities will play Sundays at 7PM, May 7th – May 28th.
