HYPOCRISY! CORRUPTION! LOVE!
Odyssey Theatre Ensemble and Circus Theatricals present
Molières ‘The Misanthrope,’ Opening April 23rd
LOS ANGELES, CA— The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble and Circus Theatricals continue their successful relationship with Molières The Misanthrope, translated into English verse by Richard Wilbur. The Misanthrope, a comedy about hypocrisy, corruption, and love, will open Saturday, April 23.
In the actor/manager tradition, Circus Theatricals Artistic Director Jack Stehlin will direct and play Alceste, a.k.a. “The Misanthrope.”
The Misanthrope marks the third Moliere comedy presented by the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble and Circus Theatricals. The 2003 production of Tartuffe won the LA Weekly Theatre Award for “Best Comedy Ensemble.”
In The Misanthrope, Alceste, although disgusted by the hypocrisy, injustice, and overall corruption of society, can’t help but fall in love with Celimene, a vivacious young woman with a reputation as a shameless flirt - and a gaggle of suitors. Alceste’s struggle to change her coquettish ways while battling his jealousies and his own hypocrisies leads to comic results.
The Misanthrope, written in 1666, is considered one of Moliere’s most satirical full-length comedies. It will be performed in rhyming verse and in period-style costumes.
The cast includes Jack Stehlin (Alceste), John Ross Clark (Philinte), Adam Paul (Oronte),
Yael Berkovich(Celemene), Catherine O’Connor (Eliante), Rebecca Dines (Arsinoe),
James Tupper (Acaste), Patrick Vest (Clitandre), Phil Pyle (Basque), Joe Bays (Dubois).
The design team includes Jessica Gelay (sets), Gelareh Khalioun (costumes), Derrick McDaniel (lights), Daniel Nathan Spector (original music). Producers are Ron Sossi (Odyssey Theatre Ensemble Artistic Director), and Jeannine Stehlin (Circus Theatricals Producing Director).
The Misathrope runs April 23 – June 19, 2005, playing Wednesdays through Sundays at 8PM, Sundays at 7PM. 3PM matinees are Sundays May 1, 8, 29, June 12 at 3PM (no 7PM perfs. on matinee days.)
